Be Hoppy - Drink Beer

There's nothing hoppier than a cold glass of beer, a spicy Salsa Burrito, and a great seat at your favorite bar at the Lake of the Ozarks. At Salsa on the Strip we have 12 different beers on tap, just waiting for you to come enjoy them. Not to mention all of the other liquor we have, vodka, tequila, margaritas and more! Beer is an interesting and unique beverage, so we want to take some time to learn a little more about our favorite drink. Here are 7 fun facts to make you hoppy!

"Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be not way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer." - Dave Barry

1. Ancient Babylonians were the firs to brew this fine beverage. They also took it so seriously that if you brewed a bad batch, they punished you by drowning you in it.

2. Certain water in certain regions can be better suited to making specific types of beer. Dublin's mineral-rich, hard water is great for making Stouts.

3. Storing your beer bottles uprights makes it taste better. It minimizes oxidation and contamination from the cap.

4. Pilgrims on the Mayflower stopped at Plymouth Rock instead of continuing on to Virginia because they ran out of supplies...more importantly, they ran out of beer.

5. In 1814 a brewery tank with 3,500 barrels of beer ruptured, which caused a tidal wave of beer through a London Parish.

6. Cenosillicaphobia is the fear of an empty glass. Never fear, at Salsa on the Strip, we can keep the glass full with the best beer at the Lake of the Ozarks!

7. The Vikings believed that there was a giant goat in Valhalla (viking heaven), who instead of providing milk, provided an endless supply of beer.

Celebrate Mexican Independence Day Today!

Today is the day that Mexico celebrates it's Independence Day! Even though we are in the United States, it's always important to know what our neighbors have gone through to achieve their own independence. Here are a few interesting facts to get you up-to-date on this day in history.
The people of Mexico were rebelling to fight for freedom from the Spaniards. They had been forced into slavery more that 300 years earlier.

There were many conspiracies about rebelling against the Spaniards between 1809-1810 those who were involved and discovered were punished in a harsh manner.

On September 15th, Father Hidalgo received news that he had been found out. He was among those that were involved in conspiracies. This news lead him to take quick action.

Father Miguel Hidalgo, a Roman Catholic Priest, rallied the town people of Dolores, Guananjuato on September 15, 18810 to give them the speech known today as El Grito do Dolores (The Cry of Dolores).

Traveling throughout Mexico, Father Hidalgo had a following of nearly 90,000 poor farmers and Mexican civilians. They united to rebel against the Spanish rule.

October 2nd was the selected date those involved in conspiracies had decided to take action against Spain.

Father Hidalgo was eventually captured and killed in 1811.

After the death of Father Hidalgo in 1811, there were two more significant fights that lead his successors to victory against Spain in 1821.

It took eleven years to defeat the Spaniards. The war for Independence was won in 1821.

Even after victory in 1821, it took Mexico two years for their first presidential election which was held in 1823.

Fun Facts About Labor Day

Happy Labor Day weekend from your favorite Mexican restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks! The Lake will be hopping with excitement as people celebrate their three day weekend. How did Labor Day actually start? We have all of the answers for you in this blog. As well as an answer to the biggest question: why don't we wear white afterwords?

The first celebrated US Labor Day was on Tuesday, September 5th, 1882 in New York City, planned by the Central Labor Union.

Oregon was the first state to celebrate Labor Day as a legal holiday in 1887.

There is a disagreement about who actually propose Labor Day as a holiday. Some say it was Peter J. McGuire, who was the co-founder of the American Federation of Labor. Others believe that it was Matthew Maguire, a machinist.

Historians say the expression "no white after Labor Day" comes from when the upper class would return from their summer vacation and stow away their lightweight, white summer clothes as they returned back to school and work.

Americans worked 12-hour days, seven days a week during the 19th century.

The Adamson Act was passed on September 3, 1916 to establish an eight-hour work day.

What do we celebrate on Labor Day? The contributions and achievements of the 155 million men and women who are in the U.S. workforce.

Labor Day is on a Monday because it was thought to be a nice break between Fourth of July and Thanksgiving. The first observance was on a Tuesday, but then moved to Monday the next year where it remained.

President Grover Cleveland was the President when the bill was signed making Labor Day a national holiday in 1894.

Labor Day is celebrated on May 1st in Europe. It's also called International Workers' Day.

The team at Salsa on the Strip would like to wish you a fun, safe Holiday weekend. While you're out having fun this weekend, remember your favorite restaurant when you start to get hungry! We have an amazing menu with burritos, tacos, nachos and salads. The best part is they can all be customized just the way you like them! Come in and let us add a little SPICE to your Holiday weekend!
