10 Fun Facts About Margaritas!

There's nothing quite like a delicious burrito and a margarita! As the best Mexican restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks, we are definitely qualified in the burrito and margarita department. Where did margaritas start, though? What makes them so popular? We wanted answers to these very important questions, and now we're passing them on to you!

It is believed that the original margarita was invented in 1948, in Aculpulco, by socialite Margarita Sames. There are many different stories floating around about the beginning of the margarita, though.

On average, American consume 185,000 margaritas per hour.

Margarita means daisy in Spanish.

The first frozen margarita machine was invented in 1971 by Mariano Martinez. He converted a soft serve ice-cream machine into a frozen margarita machine!

The salt is important for a good margarita, it brings out the sweet and sour flavors of the drink. Even just a pinch will help with the bitterness and enhance the important flavors.

The world's largest margarita was made in Las Vegas at the Flamingo Hotel. It was 8,500 gallons and served in a 17-foot tall tank. It took 60 people 300 hours to create, and was called the "Lucky-Rita".

The world's most expensive margarita costs $1,200, and you can find it at the 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar in Manhattan. It's made with high-end tequila, and even the ice is made from expensive Lois Roederer Cristal Champagne.  Finally, it's poured in a hand-blown, Ralph Lauren, Hungarian crystal glass that you can take with you. At least half of the money goes to a charity of the drinker's choice!

February 22nd is National Margarita Day.

Atlanta, Miami, St. Louis and Nashville are among the best major metro cities for the Margarita. You can find the best margaritas at the Lake of the Ozarks right here at Salsa on the Strip, though!

The U.S. is the number one tequila market - larger than Mexico!

These are just a few fun facts to get you thinking about margaritas. Of course, now that you're thinking about them, you'll have to come get one...or two! Our restaurant doesn't just have the best margaritas, we also have fabulous burritos, and a wonderful place to come kick back and relax. With our delicious menu, we are a great place to stop and get something to eat this evening. Check out a few of these fun facts before you come!

Not all Mexican food is spicy.

It is actually a myth that all Mexican food is spicy. Though most Mexican dishes are spiced with a pepper, primarily chili, not all peppers are hot. When the seeds are exported to other countries, their flavor profile can change and will result in a sweet, milder chili. Mexican food and flavors are also regional; in Ycatan, the food is not as spicy, and in many cases throughout Mexico the spiciness comes from the salsa.

Chia, tomatoes, vanilla and dragonfruit originated in Mexico.

This may be surprising, but these items are in fact from Mexico. Tomatoes are generally attributed to Italy, but are definitely a tasty gift from Mexico. Mexican vanilla can be a delicious addition to your baking cabinet, with it's strong beautiful flaovr, it is a delicious Mexican ingredient. Though dragonfruit is generally considered Asian, it's Mexican as well.

Desserts are very popular in Mexican cuisine.

In ancient Mexican history, dessert wasn't popular. In fact, sugar came over with the conquerors and after a significant amount of time, delicious Mexican desserts were invented. Now popular desserts are Mexican egg custard and sweet milk curds cooked in syrup. Before sugar came around, their natural fruits were dessert.

Authentic guacamole does not use lime or garlic

A typical recipe for an authentic guacamole includes tomato, white onion, serrano chili or jalapeno, cilantro and salt. These ingredients will be roughly mashed and can include olive oil. Authentic guacamole will never include garlic, lemon, red onion, cumin, cayenne pepper, chili powder or any other spices.

Salsa shows up on every table.

This may not actually be a fact, since it depends on the country or region, but we certainly love our salsa at Salsa on the Strip, so it seems very noteworthy! We have several delicious varieties of salsa that will make your burrito or taco delicious!
